Bilingual is the
person who uses another language in addition to their mother tongue and does
so fluently, that is, they speak both languages, although sometimes they
dominate one language more than the other. The bilingual can
act as two monolinguals in one person. The bilingual person
knows and speaks two languages, but does not know the cultural context of
their second language. Bilingual
specifically refers to two languages. The bilingual is not
bicultural although there are bicultural bilinguals. |
Bicultural take part, to varying degrees, in the life of two or more
cultures. Bicultural adapt, in part at least, their attitudes, behaviours, values, languages, etc. to these cultures. It implies the coexistence or the union of two cultures. The idea of culture, for its part, refers to the set of knowledge, traditions and habits of a community, a historical period, etc. They combine and blend aspects of the cultures involved. Some of these come from one or the other culture(s) whereas others are blends of the cultures. Therefore, some aspects of the bicultural are adaptive and controllable (this allows the bicultural to adapt to the context and the situation). The bicultural is one who has had the opportunity to be in two different cultural contexts. Presupposes the presence of two cultures. |
